Fleas are small, wingless insects with flattened sides and well-developed rear legs. They have 4 life stages; egg, larvae, pupa and adult. Their colour varies from yellow to dark red. The eggs are white, oval in shape and around 0,5mm in size. There are four species, which can become a pest: cat fleas, dog fleas, rat fleas and bird fleas.
Adult fleas will feed off a variety of hosts, but, dependant on their species they have host preferences. The eggs are generally deposited in a nest or food-rich environment, not on the host. The larva eats organic matter like skin cells or faeces. Fleas can be a vector for diseases and can cause skin irritation.
